I cleaned the area with a soft brush and compressed air. Can see some wear where the brushes touch.

Here is the brush that had it's wire short against the basket.

That armature needs work! Take it to a motor house and have it turned. It shows lots of damage from worn / stuck brushes. It should be smooth and shiny not all pitted. You can see copper shorting between bars too.

Thanks, I noticed that and was wondering if I could use a pick to clean it out. I like your idea better...Jim

It looks to me like it will clean up ok with a turning on a lathe. Shouldn't cost you much since it's already out of the motor. Find a place that rebuilds electric motors.

Thanks. There is a local shop that fixed a slideout motor on my old 5th wheel years ago...Jim

Turns out it is shorted. Need to find a new one. They tested it when I was there and said maybe the carbon build up was causing the short. Called me on my way home and said they cleaned it and still shorted...Jim

It was probably severely overheated and shorted internally. I would go with an upgraded motor like a D&D. The stock motors will overheat much more easily than some of the upgraded ones. You did the right thing taking it to a motor house that knew how to test the armature for shorts. (Probably used a "Growler") Those have been around since the dark ages for testing shorted armatures.

Yeah, looked like an analog meter with a crank on the bottom of it. Looking at options now. He said I may be able to find a good, used piece online. Jim
