Default powerwise charger

I'm having a problem with a powerwise charger blowing the fuse anytime the DC plug is plugged into the cart.
Is there anything, other than a bad transformer can cause this ?
I have changed the diodes and the board.

Need help
Thanks all
Sonny

Could be something shorted in the cart, could be a short is the charger's output cable and plug and some other things.

The fuse is after the transformer and is electrically separated from it by the diodes, so a bad transformer isn't very high on my suspect list, but attached is how to test the transformer and capacitor.

I must be missing something.
I can check the AC, what I'm calling the input side. When It's plug into the AC voltage and nothing happens, but when I plug the DC plug into the cart the fuse that is attached to the amp meter blows.
I'm having a problem,( in my mind,) as to what separates the Pos and neg going into the charger from the cart. Other than the transformer.
Can you please help an old man understand in simple terms. Guess I just don't understand the chargers.

thanks
Sonny

The diodes separate the + and - from the cart's battery pack when you plug the charger into the cart.

Positive current can flow in the direction the arrow in the diode symbol points, but not against the arrow. Therefore the positive halves of the AC voltage produced by the secondary of the transformer can flow to the batteries in the cart, but the positive DC voltage from the batteries cannot flow to the transformer.

The secondary of a good transformer is almost a short to DC. It is just several feet of wire wrapped around a metal core and once the DC current starts flowing, only the DC resistance of the wire is limiting the number of amps that will flow, if it wasn't being blocked by the diodes.

----------
When the fuse blew was the charger plugged into AC power as well as being plugged into the cart?

-----------
What is the exact and complete part number marked on the diodes used for replacements?

If it has an "R" suffix, the stud is the anode rather than the cathode, so it will blow the fuse. IE: A 1N1184 will work while a 1N1184R will blow the fuse.

The AC side was not plugged in, only the DC side.
I will check on the diodes as soon as it cools off a little.

Thanks for the help.

Mr. JohnnieB
I checked the diodes and they are RA on the end. So this could be my problem ?
What is the correct number for the diode?

Thanks again

That is the problem. The "R" means the diode is mounted in the case opposite to the way they usually are, so they are backwards on the heatsink.

The EZGO Part number is 18488G1 - https://shop.ezgo.com/products/Silic...-Hardware.html

A 1N1184 will work, however any power rectifier diode rated at 35A or more and 100V or more will work. Just make sure there isn't a "R" in the suffix.

I told you I would reply about the diodes and as usual, you were spot on.
Replaced the diodes with the right ones and charger work great.
Thanks again for all your knowledge.
Sonny
