Default Popping in steering and corrosion

I’m breaking down a 2008 precedent almost to the frame and have a couple of questions. Just before I was retiring it to the garage, I was taking the steering wheel off. It was very stubborn and I ended up forcing too far past it’s stopping point and heard a pop. I couldn’t really turn the wheel and see underneath at the same time, so not really sure what it was. It it was a little loose and popped again a couple of times when driving it into the garage while turning. I thought I would figure it out when I broke it down, but haven’t seen anything out of order yet. It feels like something in the steering linkage.
I also noticed this section of the frame under the battery box is pitted and corroded. I have sprayed with water/baking so and it does not fizz anymore. Should I do anything for this? And yes, I am changing the brake line and mount.

on the popping noise I would get someone to turn the steering wheel while you watch the steering knuckle to see if is binding up any, that sometimes causes a pop noise and feeling in the wheel. As far as the corrosion I would give it a good wire brushing now that you have neutralized the acid and give it a good coat of clear coat afterwards to help prevent future corrosion on the frame.

Thanks Frizbgolf. The steering is apart right now, but I will try again when back together. I actually did have someone turn the wheel and thought I saw something that wasn’t what I thought it was. By knuckle, do you mean the linkage part above the steering box? The popping seemed to be coming from there and my brain, at the time, saw that the silver nut just above the steering box did not have a nut on the back. So I assumed it was from that and I would just get a new bolt/nut. But in reality, when I took it apart, I realized that bolt is not supposed to have a nut and what I thought I saw was not accurate. Assuming it is that area binding up, what is the remedy? Hopefully just putting it back together properly will fix it. Thanks again.

Beachguy yes that linkage above the steering box if you have it apart check to make sure that it move freely and doesn't have a sticking or binding spot in it. If it is binding I would give Tahoedog a call (site sponsor) at Revolution golf carts and order another one. They are reasonably cheap.
