8 volt batteries
Hello from Ohio,
I have a 48 volt club car with batteries to low to charge with 48 volt charger. I’ve searched high and low for an “8 volt” battery charger and have come up empty. Does anybody have a good way of charging these up so the regular charger can take over? Do they make a universal charger that might recognize 8 volters? Any advice is appreciated, thank you! |

A 12 V charger is fine for a short amount of time.

Re: 8 volt batteries
And if you have an issue with an automated charger not working/detecting the 8v's, just open up your Powerdrive and jumper the relay. It will then close in and charge. You can set it back to normal after a few hours.

Re: 8 volt batteries
Thank you guys for the advice.
So I managed to get the batteries charged up individually and the pack voltage reads 44.6, BEFORE hooking up the main negative. When I connect the main negative wire the pack drops into the 30's and my 48 volt charger fails to kick in to charge as a pack... The cart does have lights and a road ready kit installed. It seems to have a on/off switch installed but I get the same results with it on or off. After trying all this and typing this message my pack is down to ~28 volts with the negative not connected. Any ideas? |

Re: 8 volt batteries
So it continued to drop off significantly while disconnected? Unfortunately I think your battery pack may be toast. Double check your wiring, battery to battery, make sure you don't have something reversed. It may sound silly, but I see it all the time.

Are you able to wire the 48 volt pack together, NOT hook it up to the cart, and connect your 48 volt charger only to the batteries? If so, disconnect the pack from the cart, try 12 volt charging your 8 volts batteries again (you can do this individually without disconnecting them from the 48 volt battery pack), and then try to hook up your 48 volt charger again (with the pack NOT connected to the cart). It looks like you have a pretty weak battery pack and if this "Hail Mary" attempt does not work, you might be shopping for new batteries. |

Re: 8 volt batteries
I read some other posts on here about club cars and ones with voltage reducers for accessories, kicked things around a little and tried this:
1) re charged the batteries individually up towards 8 apiece 2) hooked up the wiring, correctly, with the cart in tow position 3) hooked the main positive wire up to the battery 4) hooked the main neg wire, the coming from the cart, to the battery Next I put the cart in Run and turned the key switch on, his in dash voltmeter read somewhere in the 30's even though batteries in the pack were 8 apiece when I started. I scratched my head... Then i plugged in his charger and it worked! The cart is charging right now. Is it because of the run/tow switch being in run? I wonder if it simply won't charge when in tow? now I'm kinda worried if this charger will shut off at some point, whether to trust things yet, or if the reducer works correctly. I appreciate your thoughts if anyone has advice... |

Re: 8 volt batteries
While cart is on check each battery when the dash voltmeter drops to 30 volts also buy a hydrometer and check each cell might have a dead cell

Re: 8 volt batteries
Run/Tow has no impact on the charger working or not. It will charge in either position.
If your OBC is still working correctly, it should go through the normal charge sequences and once completed it will shut down. This could very well take up to (or more than) 16 hours but it will time out at that point. So let it charge until it cuts off automatically, but don't stop it unless it exceeds the 16 hour point by at least 1 hour.... Remember, the voltage at the end will be very high (60-65v) but the amps will be low. |
