To complete the excercise you kindly outlined:
A1 = NO
A2 = Y (when Forward selector is pushed)
S1 = N
S2 + Y

The requirement to push the Forward selector further than seemingly required is a problem, of course. Does it indicate I should replace?

Thank you

Thank you very much, again. -and for the fast response.
Physically, everything is tight.
To my naive ears, "Open" sounds "Broken".
So, I will:
1. Revert to previous solenoid to experiment, and,
2. Purchase a new F/R switch.
Thank you for adjusting for your audience. I once filled a Ferrari with engine oil without the engine running. I will say, they are tough engines.

Reverted to previous solenoid. Purchasing "F/R" switch. Still clicks in spite of me.

I have reverted the new solenoid to the old, barely used solenoid with no change.
So, I will replace the F/R selector.

Whatever happened, here?
Well, I was buoyed by all the help and followed it all.
I still was not successful in spite of all the kind help I receive and all your patience.
I stuck an $1800 Rolex band in. (Don't bother.)
I'm not complaining; I still wear it as a tribute to my stupidity and to your patience. I have an image but can't post it. Knocked a hole right through it. You would like the image.
Anyway, in short, Done. No more. Replaced parts and tested and someone else will visit. We have another cart on the vineyard, so it didn't matter.
