if you short the solenoid to 36 volts wouldn't the cart just be getting 36 volts? I realize you would get a longer run time but you wouldn't get the benefit of 48 volts, would you?

I switched to 48v about 2 yrs ago and I'm still using the 36v solenoid. Some say thats a no-no, but it hasn't malfunctioned yet. Keyword...yet.

You just connect the operating coil on the solenoid (small posts) to 36v, the power portion (large posts) carry the 48v without any problem. It's only the operating coil that burns out if it is subjected to too much voltage.

Agreed! I ran this way for 2 years without a problem. Changed to 48v when a 48v charger became available in the for sale section of the forum.

Because my old solenoid was the original 36v standard-duty tin can.

I've converted a few PDS carts to 48 volts, and the performance increase in speed and torque was just awesome considering I still had the stock controller and motor and solenoid on when I first tried it out. DEFINITELY worth doing, I think. I will say, after a couple of weeks, the stock PDS controller burnt out, and I had to buy an alltrax 300 amp because they didn't care about getting any more performance out, so I stayed with a 300 amp for price. The PDS responds GREAT to 48 volts, though!

So, you routinely subject a 36v rated controller to 48v???

Oh, I see, you corrected the problem here. Interesting upgrade path, a real bonus for your customers.

Anybody feeding 48v to 36 solid state electronics is clueless about the engineering & the construction of these devices. Such person could hardly be trusted for advice or product recommendation in my opinion!
