Default 42v conversion to 48v

Considering a local 2005 western golf cart that is 42 volts. I know that they are ezgo carts. Anybody know their reasoning for running 42 volts instead of 48 volts? Can it be changed to 48 volts with the current stock electronics by upgrading batteries and charger? Any advantage in doing so? Not all that familiar with the newer ezgo electrics. Have only owned two marathons. This cart has the FNR switch on the dash.

Thanks

Drive it - you may like it. These carts had aftermarket motors and performed well.

That cart is a "curtis sepex" cart, i'd bet the controller is ready for 48v. Motor would be fine. May not gain any top speed tho, only torque (due to tach sensor). That controller is potentially programmable for speed and acceleration. I'm not sure how "locked up" the settings are in a "western spec" curtis controller.

I'll bet there would be a market for a "black box" that intercepts the tach output and sends a signal to the controller that matches the tach output up to the max RPM, then caps the output to the max RPM. Could allow you to go faster? May be a problem with regen though.

The main reason is speed. Looking to have it street legal.
