1990 marathon charger
How can I go about making sure that my charger is putting out the correct volts to the batteries?
Question being, when I plug it in it starts at about 10 volts and he drops to about 5 as it charges. |

Re: 1990 marathon charger
That is normal. They start high and end low, amperage wise... you could use a voltmeter and watch it, the pack should reach about 44-46v at final cut off.

Re: 1990 marathon charger
Which charger do you have?
There's probably a manual for it floating around here someplace. Starting out at 10 Amps, sounds a bit low, but it depends on which charger and it could be that the batteries weren't discharged all that much, or the batteries could be on their last legs, or the charger might need some TLC. Here is a chart show battery voltage vs State of Charge. (Note: Voltages given are taken 12 hours after charger turns of automatically) If the battery pack voltage ends up close to 100%, the charger and batteries are working just fine. |

Re: 1990 marathon charger
As bad as it looks, it was doing its job, or at least partially so.
The cap boosts the voltage in the secondary, thereby increasing current flow in the output circuit, but limiting it to about 20A. (Ingenious design) Without the cap, the ferroresonant transformer puts out about 60VAC, and about 90VAC with it. (Drawing attached) You can probably find a replacement at you local electrical supply. Get the motor run type, they are designed for full time operation while the motor start type are for intermittent operation. Be sure to get same MFD, that is critical. |
