97 club car 48v. Upgrade pros and cons
Brand new to the forum! I just picked up a 97 club car. 48v. It has a small lift kit, 22” tires, rear seat. New batteries. I just added heavy duty rear springs, voltage gage. Currently tore apart to get some nice electric blue shimmer paint on it. So while the body is off, since it would be easier, I was kicking around the idea of motor and controller upgrade? Been looking around. Most websites direct you to D&D selection guide. Putting in my info it ends up giving me a kit with cables, motor, solenoid and 500 amp controller. I will be using the cart at a campground and to run around on at home. Since I’m new to this, what are the pros and cons to upgrading? Any suggestions on where to look? Websites? I was looking at east coast carts website. Thank you for any response and info. This is my first cart, I love it but would like a little more performance. Thanks!!!

Re: 97 club car 48v. Upgrade pros and cons
I truthfully cannot tell you a "con" to upgrading, but the "Pro's" are endless.
Alltrax XCT controller and then an Admiral A2 or A4 motor or the motor of your choice. The XCT would be my starting point with where you are at. You can find both of those at 2 of our site sponsors Revolution Golf Cars and Carts Unlimited. |

Re: 97 club car 48v. Upgrade pros and cons
NoleFan has the right idea. Rather than ordering from a website where you'll get zero technical support, order it from a site sponsor here at BGW. That's the benefit of being a member here. You're able to order the same parts that you can find all over the internet at all of these retail websites, but you'll also receive unparalleled technical support after the sale. I'd be more than happy to help you figure out what package would be best for you. First we need to determine whether you have a series-drive system or a sepex-drive system. This is easy to determine. Do you have a lever operated F&R switch, or a toggle switch mounted in a black plastic housing? Once we've figured this out, the rest is easy.

Re: 97 club car 48v. Upgrade pros and cons
The con is cost. Upgrades can get pricey. You have to balance true need versus cost. For example, all of my carts are in a campground where the speed limit is an enforced 15 mph. There is a lot of stop signs and traffic there to keep speed down as well. It makes no sense for me to spend $1500 to get performance that will never be used. Now, I have a 6 person shuttle there that I did do a 48v conversion on because I wanted the extra torque and needed to some more speed to even get to 15 mph. It was an awesome conversion. Again, need v cost.
Regardless what you do I 2nd TahoeDawg with the sponsor thing. I did my shuttle conversion via a sponsor. With the support I received it would have been impossible to fail. |

It’s a series cart. All stock right now. It slows down pretty good on hills. Right now I get about 11-12 mph on the flat. As i said this is my first cart. So I’m kinda feelin things out as I go. Not sure what to do yet.

Re: 97 club car 48v. Upgrade pros and cons
I love the Admiral MOT-A1 motor, with the Alltrax SR 48500 controller, Heavy Duty 2 Gauge Cable Set, 400 amp solenoid, and Heavy Duty F&R Switch. This package will make it run over 22ish or so with stock size tires, or up to 26MPH or so with 23" tires with a huge increase in torque over stock. It's an awesome package. I use it on all of our series builds where people desire more power.

Could you also make a package recommendation for an IQ cart with the same criteria as the OP's.

While you have the body off consider the following:
1. Check all steering components and adjust, tighten or replace if bad. 2. If your adding 12 volt accessories it is much easier to wire with a open frame. 3. Check all suspension items, shocks, shock bushings, leaf spring bushings. 4. Inspect all frame welds for cracks and repair as necessary. |
