Default What's involved in tranny gasket?

Well, I noticed when I have a descent load on there's a clunkin noise but when it's just me on it it doesn't make that noise. So I got to lookin and saw there was gear lube comin out around the tranny gasket. So my question is, what will happen when I unbolt it? Will stuff come flyin out at me or is it as easy as taking the cover off, cleaning the surface and bolting it back on?
Thanks.
