Default 2011 rear end noise

I picked up a couple of these 2011's from a guy down by Dallas to do a couple things to and sell a while back. I drove them both a little before I bought them, and must have not noticed the sound then. One of them is making a grinding sound from the rear. It does it when you are in reverse, and in drive, but in drive it is only when you are coasting. When you are accelerating it doesn't make a sound at all, but as soon as you take your foot off the gas, there it is. Thought maybe you guys might have heard this before and could point me in the right direction.

Just did one last week. Seems the armature coupler splines wear out. Since complete motors are not available at this time I install just a new armature (brush's and rig were fine). Kind of questioned the input shaft splines, but new armature cured it fine. Have a dealer check the serial numbers to see if there still under the 4 year factory warranty. Good luck

A local motor/generator/alternator/starter can replace the coupler a lot cheaper than a whole new armature.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Guess my first thing to do is see if it's in warranty. I never thought a golf cart would have a very long warranty. If it isn't I might have to take it somewhere, I don't think I want to tear into it that far. I don't know enough about them to feel comfortable going down that road.

hey Gopokes, for giggles you should lay behind cart and try to turn the axle tubes behind the hubs and see if they turn...these are actually spacers held tight by the axle nut and when the nut is a little loose causes them to turn and make an annoying noise. I get carts back off my showroom all the time for a weird noise and it turns out to be just that. Also Yamaha sent me these rubber grommets that go down in the motor coupler to stop an annoying motor noise, which is a cheap fix that is effective.

I talked to a guy that works on these here in town that told me the same thing about the tubes. Checked it out, and these were tight. I loaded it up and took it to him to check out. He drove it in the parking lot for a minute, and said that the sound was normal. I couldn't believe it. He said yeah, some of them make that sound, some don't. I'm not sure if he just didn't know what he was talking about, or didn't want to take on any more business. I still think there is something wrong though.

its not normal. and as someone said it is the motor coupler and /or input shaft. Its a common issue. Best bet is to change both the coupler and input shaft.

I am gonna have to find a different person to take it to I guess. Any ballpark what something like that would cost if you take it to a shop? I don't think I have the time to do something like that or knowledge I suppose.

Talked to another shop, he couldn't say over the phone but felt like it was probably a gear or two, and if it was bad enough he'd just replace the whole rear end. If it's just gears in looking at 500-700, if it's the whole rear end more like 1500-1700. I'm going to take it to him next Friday and see what he says.

Don't know where you are located, but sounds like you need to find someone that is qualified to diagnoss the problem correctly..at a resonable price. Good luck.
