G29 Loose Primary Clutch
Hi guys- newbie here. Not new to engines or clutches, but definitely new to the golf cart scene.
I just picked up a 2010 Drive from a local dealer. Bone stock from a fleet lease turn-in. I got a screaming deal on this thing because he thought it had a bad engine. It runs fine, but it makes a terrible racket any time it's running. Up or down hill, forward or reverse, it doesn't matter. Upon closer inspection, the primary clutch slides in and out on the shaft 1/4" by hand. Not just the inner or the outer, but both along with the generator pulley. Is this normal? Either tomorrow or Wednesday night I'll pull the main bolt out and see if it just slides off by hand or if it's held on by something else. All past experiences I've had with quads and sleds a puller was needed for removal- and it looks like that is supposed to be the case after searching several threads on here. Please advise and thanks in advance! |

Re: G29 Loose Primary Clutch
the endplay is common & not a sure sign of trouble. the team rear clutch is known to be really noisy (can be removed, cleaned & lubed, but has no grease fitting). team clutch setup is also known to eat belts faster than some others. when buying a belt, only get a yamaha belt "Jw1-g6241" or a heavy duty cogged kevlar belt, no cheapo belts they wear out fast.

Re: G29 Loose Primary Clutch
Thanks CG! At some point this week I'll pull the clutch and start it up and see if the noise is gone. Regardless, I just sold my quad so I'll probably be giving Plowman's a ring. It's going to need all the power I can get out of it by the time I'm done with it. I just want to isolate the noise from the motor if possible.

Re: G29 Loose Primary Clutch
I had the team clutch in it and when I removed the outer cover, I could see the white rollers or weights, or whatever they are rolling around in the grooves. When I gave it a shake, it sounded like the god-awful noise I've been hearing. Off to Plowmans 1st thing tomorrow morning to get a tune-up kit for this thing.
I've never seen weights that weren't on some type of fulcrum before. Are they supposed to be loose in there or is this thing completely destroyed? |

Re: G29 Loose Primary Clutch
the weights are normally loose like that. only clutch i have seen like that as well. i have not had much trouble at all with the primary team clutch. the secondary is a different story, they all get noisey as they age.

Re: G29 Loose Primary Clutch
After comparing the 2 clutches side by side, I think the spring in the old one was either broken or missing. Outer (movable) side was just free-floating on the shaft. The new 1 has a nice normal feeling action.

Re: G29 Loose Primary Clutch
the only factory yamaha primary clutch to use a spring was early G1 clutches in the '80s. your front clutch made by yamaha is not supposed to have a spring in it.

Re: G29 Loose Primary Clutch
My factory Team primary did not have a spring in it. But Plowman reworked it and added one. Helps keep the clutch from "jerking" or "grabbing" on startup.

Re: G29 Loose Primary Clutch
Thanks Sandbagger- yes- my new one does have 1 in it. Don wouldn't tell me what was in his "secret sauce", but it sure works good.
Even the new one makes more noise than any snowmobile or quad I've owned, but I guess that inherent in the design. |
