Default 2012 yamaha drive battery guage

Should the battery guage on my Yamaha drive always be lit? The red light is constantly on showing the battery level, even when I take the key out. Just wondering if this is normal. I bought it a week ago, beautiful condition and very clean. This one issue makes we wonder though. And how far should I bible to go on a full charge? Any help would be appreciated.

If wired to the factory meter wiring, will not be on when cart is off. It draws very, very little so it's not really a concern. Do not rewire it to the keyswitch unless you know what you are doing, or else it will be reset to full every time key is turned on (even if batteries are not truly full). As far as range, there are too many variables to guess. Which battery pack do you have (3 different capacity are available)? Hills or flat land? You driving modestly & accelerate slowly? You will have to experiment in your unique setting & driving style to get a true idea.

OK thanks for the info. I was considering a re wire or switch, put will not proceed. I have a pack of 4 batteries in a straight line If that means anything.
