G9 crank grind
I had my crankshaft ground to .010 undersized which put me at 1.245 inch.
stock crank should be 1.258-1.259......... so I ordered .010 under bearings.... would that be right? I assembled tonight and torqued rod cap to 38lbs and went to rotate the assembly and it had a mile of play on the rod.......... I disassembled the rod and took the piston back out of the block and put the rod back together and torqued to specs without the crank. I measured the bearing opening and it measured what the stock crank should measure. 1.256 I know I order the correct bearings on the package it was - J38-11656-10 this is the bearing I am using j38-11656-20 I ordered both because I didnt know what the crank size would be ground down to and I am on time constraint. |

Re: G9 crank grind
That is .013-.014 under not .010. Can you ask the party that ground the crank about it? Manual says .0008-.002 clearance, .004 max for rod bearing on crank. Manual says there are two crank pin sizes, two rod sizes, and three bearing sizes to fit those. They are marked.

Re: G9 crank grind
crank is now at 1.245. I am finding a used crank to put back in.
don't make the mistake that I did and assume that you can get undersized bearings for these engines...... I will have the undersize crank weld and regrind at some point and assemble a different engine with it. unfortunetly I do not see a number on the connecting rod that would indicate which one it is. does anyone know the numbers on the side of the rod that would help identify which rod it is.? |

Re: G9 crank grind
Its a number on the rod right where the cap meets the rod, right over the seam. Crank marked on side of counter weight. I don't know what the different sizes are, or what the numbers mean.
Crank pin size: no 1 1.2583-1.2587 no 2 1.2580-1.2583 Rod, I think bore size of rod not bearing no 0 1.3784-1.3789 no 1 1.3780-1.3784 Subtract rod size number from crank pin number to find bearing no 0 brown j38-11656-00 no 1 black xxxxxxxx -10 no 2 blue xxxxxxxx -20 Does that make sense, you take crank number (1 or 2) minus rod number (0 or 1) and pick bearing from that code. Bearings should have that color on the side right in center of a half. So I guess the bearing bore and thickness could be different. |

Re: G9 crank grind
In this case (can not read the rod ink mark) I go with -10. BUT, plastigauge is the true test!

Re: G9 crank grind
ok thanks smallblock450sl i'm taking the block to be bored .50mm on Wednesday, maybe the guy will have a plastigage to check it out, I did see this in the manual.. and of course there was no mark for the balancer neither, I did mark it before I took it apart but when I blasted the crank with degreaser I lost the paint mark I put on it..

Re: G9 crank grind
That is why I posted the sizes, should be able to measure the rod and find out. If the ink is gone, its gone, kind of half baked to use ink to ID inside an engine. They make things called stamps and scribes and all that.
