FE290 Oil Leak
A friend of mine has a pretty nasty oil leak in her 2000 Club Car DS with an FE290. Looks to me like it could be the side cover gasket but there's oil everywhere so it's hard to be certain. I've never worked on an FE290 before, but have worked on several KF82 flatheads. If I pulled the motor and popped the clutch off, is the side cover gasket a pretty easy repair?
The oil is all over the passenger side of the engine bay. Like the motor slings it around while driving. Maybe it's the crank seal? I'll try and get a pic and post it here. |

Re: FE290 Oil Leak
If an FE290 is going to leak, about a 90% probability it's the side cover gasket.I always replace the seal behind the clutch while I've got it apart. Pretty simple & straight forward with the engine out.

Re: FE290 Oil Leak
Thanks! Maybe I'll offer to fix it for her this winter. The owner is an older lady in our campground who's husband passed away last year and she's always putting oil in it. I was going to put new seats on it for her but this issue seems more pressing at the moment, as the oil is getting up on the wood base under the main seat and starting to deteriorate it.

From start to finish it is probably a 3-4 hour job if all goes well.

Re: FE290 Oil Leak
Not everyone is a pro mechanic. You or I could do it on flat rate, but majority of people here don't take things apart for a living. Come to think of it... I don't take tings apart for a living anymore either.

Re: FE290 Oil Leak
I consider the bearing an “as needed” item. If it spins freely & quietly there’s no need. But if it rough or noisy at all replace it while you’ve got it apart.

Re: FE290 Oil Leak
Mine was blown out when i bought it. The cover bolts loosen up and ruins the gasket. Real straight forward repair.
