I know it's been done, but my question is why?

My 2 cents...
Like I said above - This is my opinion. You points are all good and correct Just not something I would do for myself...

Aren't these belt drive systems similar to those used on sleds & ATVs? And they don't have belt issues (well, most of them don't).
Seems odd to me to start & stop the engine multiple times over the course of a few minutes.... rather than just starting once & running till your done with the cart.

MIKE... such restraint!!! I'm proud of you!

look... everybody seems to have a valid point...
I like my cart to idle, because "it's different"
and I NEVER let it idle too long because of the wear on the mechanicals,

Just remember... there is NO fan, radiator, or anything else to keep your engine cool...
shut it down whenever you can... or just keep driving!

Like I said,it is an air cooled engine, and there IS a fan that constantly blows air over the cylinder, and head. It can idle forever and it will not overheat.

NO FAN? Did you take it off?
Cause it sure had one. LOL
It's a preference thing like Mike said.
Here's my $.02 as long as your clutch's are working correctly, Idling is fine ever notice how they leave semi's idle. And to show you it applies here, The KF82 used in Club Car was originally built for construction equipment. Seen some idle (1200 rpm) for 30 days they would shut down, change oil and start up for another 30 days nonstop. We setup 95% of all carts we sell to work like Lockmans, Start with pedal stay running till you turn key off. It does work best on Club Cars though as the starter is not energerized when idling until pedal is pushed.

Well, I just tried to disconnect each of the wires on the key switch of my Marathon & it doesn't even try to start in either case. I traced the wires to what appears to be the coil & to another switch of some kind (by the key). I tried disconnecting a couple other wires but struck out.
