G1 Starts in reverse, not forward. Also Need a part

Hi, i have a yamaha g1 and it starts in reverse, but not forward.

I noticed that when in reverse the starter spins just fine and mildly fast.

but when you put it in forward, the starter spins alot slower and wont turn it over fast enough to start it.

I have cleaned every connection, also took the starter apart the cleaned it. Then i switched the solenoids and it still has the same problem.

I also cleaned the carb.


I am missing this screw from the carb (not an adjuster)


it doesnt run now that its lost. does anyone know where i can get one? or has an extra laying around? its from a mikuni carb.

ok, i found the jet.

just not sure why my starter is going slower in forwards than reverse.

i even turned the motor over by hand and there seems to be no difference in resistance from the motor/clutch

I would look very hard at the secondary clutch to be sure it
is not opening up when trying to start. It would make it spin slow
if not closed down to low ratio.

allright, well just to make sure.. i took off the drive belt and tried starting it.

the starter still spins just as slow in forwards as it did before, and reverse spins fast enough to start it.

im kinda at a loss here..

bump, would really like to get this cart going. any suggestions?

I would take the starter belt off and run the starter/generator (s/g) in both directions and see if the condition is caused by the s/g?
If so, you may need a new one or, I dont know if they sell brush kits for them or not??

yes bad brushes can cause a weak starter i think, check if maybe the belt is slipping? get a lott of ppl who think there starter is bad and the belt is just loose.

Check cable connections to the battery first! Unlike other Yamaha models, the solenoids are connected to the negative battery.
