Only in my dreams would they get rid of anything for free! They wouldn't even give me a rusted up beaten to the ground truck that apparently hasn't been touched in years!

Ok so now they want me to run compression checks on the engine..what specs am I looking for?

Around 160 psi is nominal, (full, wide open throttle while cranking)

for - FE 290
read http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-c...pression+fe290

for the 350 (which U probably have) with electric start I was told it had ACR (Automatic Compression Release)
and I'm not sure how to measure this ?

OOPS lockman can type faster than me.

Yeah Gleemo... I was just reading the manual, and it says 156 psi (min) for an FE290.
I didn't know a 96 Carry-all 1 had an FE350, I thought just Carry-all 2's did...
(I've been wrong before, but not often... )

An FE350 (without ACR) is the same as an FE290
An FE350 (with ACR) is 71psi

Per the manual(s) anyway...

And the result is about 75psi..it does have the FE290 in it. Does that engine come with an ACR?

No... no, it doesn't! ACR is mostly only for a "key start" cart!

As bad as its been running, I'm hoping its just carbon on the valves.

That is what I am hoping too but what do you think the chances are that the piston and everything else is ruined since the butterfly is completely gone and I was just told today but one of the guys who drives it that this problem started a while ago and proceeded to get much worse before I finally got ahold of it?

Going back in time... to my recollection,
Very few have had any serious problems with their engine after the butterfly was "eaten"

Cylinder and Piston damage... not much, (the butterfly will get "chewed up"!)
A valve wedged open... a good possibility!

But, nobody that I can remember has said anything about any "major" repairs!

I'm no cart expert but wouldn't a wet compression test give a good indication of where the loss is?
