This is interesting.

I have two Yamaha factory manuals. The first one covers the early models from 1979-81. The torque table in the front of the book states the bolt torque is 38 ft-lbs. The text in the body of the manual states torque to 43 ft-lbs.

The second manual covers later models and is the same manual referenced by Dirk in the other thread. The torque table in the front just says 54 ft-lbs, the text says to torque first to 72, loosen and retorque to 54, just as Dirk stated.

Apparently even Yamaha isn't too sure.

I just zap them on (relatively lightly) with my air impact wrench.

If it's tight, it's all right.

Step 4. Remove the drive belt and starter belt.

Step 5. Using a clutch puller (can be bought or you can make your own. I bougth mine) remove the inner clutch plate/shaft
Attachment 42606

Step 6. Remove the oil pump gear houseing and pull BOTH the inner and outter housing off of the engine case
Attachment 42607

Step 7. run a screw into the seal and using a claw hammer pry the old seal out.

Step 8. put the new seal in (put some oil on the part of the seal where it slides on the crank shaft to keep it from catching and tearing).

Step 9. Reinstall everything the way it came off.

Hope this helps
Hi,
New here, YES, it does help! Question: removing oil pump cover over gears...gasket or silicone to reseal it?
Thx,
Ed

Is there a trick to removeing the inner clutch plate/shaft I put a puller on it and broke it. I noticed threads inside the shaft also. Is it threaded on.

There is a YouTube video where the guy had trouble and heated it and it came right off.

This is the first of 4 or 5 videos he has on this. Good trial and error and shows a few mistakes that can be avoided.

Between Steps 3 and 4, when you remove the outer clutch plate, is there supposed to be a spring between the clutch plates which is inside a round metal piece with a bearing on the inner side toward the starter pulley? When I took mine apart, I found no spring and the bearing welded to she shaft. I know this is not correct. Is there anywhere to view an exploded view of this clutch assembly. Thanks Larry Ljtsirk
