Bellows Steering Boot Replacement
Help me out Guru's!
Attached is a picture of my '97 txt steering. The old steering rack boot was busted up, so I ordered a new one. I have read the manual for how to separate this piece to install a new bellows, but when I try to, it's not coming apart. I have been taking 2 wrenches (1 on the left side where you can see slots for it, and the other right beside it where it "looks" like they join) and trying to turn. Nothing is happening. I don't want to over-turn them and break something. Am I doing this right? The area I drew in red shows where the bellows installs. |

Re: Bellows Steering Boot Replacement
the small nut is the lock. Back it off and turn the tie rod end unscrewing it from the unit. Note how many threads show behind the lock nut so you can put it back where it is... hope this helps

Re: Bellows Steering Boot Replacement
Here is a better picture. I need to confirm that I am supposed to separate this assembly where #1 and #2 join. Is this correct?

Re: Bellows Steering Boot Replacement
Hold the end of 2 with channel locks and turn 1 down
1 is a lock nut. Then turn 2 and 1 out to remove it. |

From what you said, if I hold #2 and turn #1 down, that means the threads are backwards. Is this correct? |

Re: Bellows Steering Boot Replacement
I'm just trying to make sure I turn the nut the correct direction. I don't want to damage anything.

Re: Bellows Steering Boot Replacement
I dont think you have enough @$$ behind those wrenches to hurt anything, nut #1 is a jam nut, loosen that up and it will come out easy. You only need to loosen a lil bit not all the way, I usually loosen them about 1/2 turn so i know where it goes back to thread wise.
