Re: Machining clutch sheives
The driven is what you mostly hear about, my new belt already rides at the top of the driven but the drive had a good 1/4" of ramp left where the belt never touched.
I'm not touching the driven till after I get the effects of what I've done to the drive clutch, hopefully good results. |

Re: Machining clutch sheives
you need to put a spacer under the thrust washer equall to what you machined off. that also should be the thickness of the spacer that is needed under the snap ring. You can get a new thrust washer for about 8 at a dealer as i remember. If you have access to a surface grinder you can grind down the old one to use as a spacer. or take that amount off the faces in the first place.
the spacer under the thrust washer will throw the outer sheave closer to the inner. it isn't your spring well, or so i've heard..... |

Re: Machining clutch sheives
4verticle, thanks and I've thought about what you just said, but the thrust washer is not even in the mix yet, the clutch is assembled only up to the snap ring, the clutch outer housing with the fly weights thrust washer isn't on there, the two faces can be squeezed together by hand right up to the point of spring spring wrap-up.
The thrust washer/fly weights assy, I will be looking closely at that next, haven't had time till weekend gets here. thanks. |

Re: Machining clutch sheives
I separated the drive clutch halves today and had another look at my spring and spacer set up and located what was limiting the travel, there is a nylon spacer between the halves which acts as a stop bumper, can't believe I missed it, all I had to do shave it down a little, now the halves close up completely and the belt rides on the very top of the ramps, the idler bearing, so you call it (thanks 4verticle) is set back quite a bit probably at least .100 don't want to take off any more but it's all good now.

Re: Machining clutch sheives
My cart is sorta locked in right now in front of my boats by the wood burner where I've been tinkering all winter. I've only run it in neutral and watched the clutches operate under no load conditions.
