The original cart was the 1964 Caroche which was known as the "C Series" cart within the Johns Manville organization. Club Car bought the company in 1979 and in 1981 they introduced a completely new design which was the "D Series" and it was shortened to DS and remained as the model designation. Other than some plastics type changes, the body of the DS cart has been essentially the same since it was introduced.

Old post, but thought i'd add the correct answer.
the company brought in designer Dom Saporito and in late 1980 introduced a stylish electric golf car with the model name DS, the designer’s initials. Modified, tweaked and improved over the next two decades, Club Car rode the DS golf car and the growth of golf course construction to dramatic market share gains and industry-wide respect http://www.clubcar.com/Pages/background_history.aspx |
