Thanks again ScottyB. I popped of the valve cover to adjust the valves...I do not see how to do it...sorry, but does the sticky link you sent relate to my engine? I have the 86 Club Car, with the Kawasaki 341cc flat head. Thanks for any guidance.

When the engine is cold...Remove the valve cover and the spark plug. Insert a small wooden dowel or unsharpened pencil into the spark plug hole and gently feel for the top of the piston. Rotate the crankshaft with one hand and hold the dowel on the center of the piston. Thus you can fell when the piston reaches the top of it's travel. (TDC = top dead center) . If you have been watching the valves while rotating the crank you noticed that the valves opened and closed. First one and then the other. At TDC both valves are closed. This is the position for adjustment. In this position there should be a small gap between the end of the valve stem and the tappet which pushes the valves. Verify that you are at TDC and the valves are closed, measure this gap. If this measurement is not what the specs call for (it is often too small or nonexistent) an adjustment is neccessary. There is a nut with a screw in the middle of it on end of the tappet on top of each valve stem. Working the wrench and screw driver together make the adjustment and tighten the nut. Recheck the adjustment as often the final tightening will shrink the gap. When you get it right rotate the engine a time or two and recheck. If it is still good you got it, Have fun and recheck this on a new engine after a little run-in time. Better safe than sorry.

Pulled the engine....again. There is no way to adjust the valves on this particular engine. I took it back to the machinist, he said the same thing (no way to adjust) the only thing to do is shave down the tappets. Or replace them and start over. Also, there is no way to feel for TDC with a pencil or a dowel on this engine. The sparkplug hole is lined up over the exhaust valve...the piston is out of reach to determine TDC with a straight object. The only way is to remove the head to get a birds-eye-view.

If they "bored and honed" your block they had to take the crank out which would include takeing the cam out....just a observation

Actually, on this model, the cylinder can be removed and replaced w/out removing the cam or crank.

The "buttons" are called tappets and come in many sizes. Place a feeler gauge between tappet and lifter. you should have about .010 on each side. If too little, <.010, remove tappet and file it slightly until it's right (checking often). If the gap is too great then a bigger tappet is needed. Contact a Clubcar dealer for tappet sizes.

Pull the head and put the piston @ TDC. Pour some oil on the valves to see if it leaks past. It is also not uncommon for the camshaft to break in this engine. The cam gear is plastic and is riveted to the camshaft.
