Default sloppy steering 84 gasser(please help)

my steering wheel on my 84 gasser has a ton of play in it and I have tracked the play to the veritcal tube that that is held in place by a cotter pin on the underside of the cart and is attached up top by the steering rack and a ball joint. I have no idea what this part is called but it looks like it has a bushing where the end of it mounts through the bracket by where the cotter pin is. something is worn because when I turn the wheel it moves back and forth like 1/2 inch so at speed my cart is all over the place. I removed the cotter pin but cannot figure out how it comes out of there. please help

Check your local dealer for two of part # B-15012-G1, Idler bushings.

i just figured out that it was call the idler shaft. How does it come out? does the body have to come off? is there a bushing on both ends? is there anything else that should be replaced?

I would suggest tearing it down first to get a complete parts list together because you might need to replace the idler shaft also. # B-16412-G1

Check this link for parts list and service manual.

looking at the diagram, I would only guess the Idler shaft drops down from the top held in place by a keeper at the top or bottom.
Download the service manual and do some Throne reading.
