2008 G29/ Drive Speed Question

How fast will a stock cart with 6in lift and 10/22 tires run? I tested it with a GPS unit and it is showing on flat surface at 14 mph. Can I increase the speed to around 20 mph without buying a new performance upgrade? I have headlights and tailights/ Brake lights already installed. Controller serial # starts with JW2.

you can have your dealer reprog your OEM controller for 19mph.

Dealer can upgrade controller and that will get you 19-20 and if you want another 5mph on top of that you can get the roadrunner motor for $250 and that will get you going at 25mph. I have a Drive and thats the only thing I hate about it is that there are not as many speed options as CC and EG. Other than that I like everything else

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the "roadrunner" motor will be terrible for torque on a lifted cart. The stock controller is about 260 amp, and the "roadrunner" motor was a compromise to get a little more speed on the street, within the limits of a small/weak stock controller. it will not perform well in a lifted cart. I have made better systems (series and sepex) that would be good for lifted YDREs, but i have had a problem finding the plugs to make them plug-n-play. The stock YDRE Drive controller can be programmed for 19MPH(costs about $80 to buy the code from yamaha), but it is too small a controller for much off-road action. those tires are going to be too much load for an already small controller.

Yeah your right on a lifted cart it would be weak with the stock controller. I have a GE 500A with mine and I forget how weak the stock moric is. For $300 for that GE 500A that would be the starting point to building a faster or more torque cart

that GE500 may work in cooler climates, but its thermal characteristics lead to "automatic thermal cutback" here in the desert. I have one of them on the shelf that I tried with no success due to heat problems. I have put both Alltrax DCX and SPM controllers in YDREs, SPM800 = FUN!!! Check out my last vid post on thread "Making a 2007 48v faster". I want to build more of those.

I live in S FL so its like a Jungle most of the year and I have not had any issues with this cart but I use it mostly on the streets. The only heat I got was a hot solenoid since im still running the stock one. How did you configure the Alltrax with the Drive throttle system?

YDRE uses 0-5volt throttle, it gets electricky!!! you have to make a 5v reference voltage. When building a SPM series setup, i add two relays in a "flip-flop" configuration, like on a G-1 or ParCar to achieve forward and reverse. The DCX was more "trial and error"... as it has no 0-5volt.

hi all. new owner of a 2008 Drive and dove tailing on this older thread. I have the upgrade bug. Cart has 10 inch rims/tires. Thinking of the following upgrades

dealer speed kit
8:1 gears
new Alltrax 800 Amp controller

Any other suggestions. I want torque and speed !!!!!!!!

This upgrade as you describe is impossible. The alltrax controller is not compatible with the factory controller speed upgrade. The "spm 800" controller is a "series motor" controller and not the same as the "sepex motor" system originally installed in the drive. The "series" conversion requires a motor change, controller change, addition of a reversing contactor to facilitate F&R, wiring modification, and will eliminate the need for 8:1 gears. It will do around 26 mph, and as you saw, has plenty of torque.
