Default Yamaha G16 (1996) Smoking Issue

All,

I am trying to see if I am being taken for a ride. I brought a 1996 G16 last year. Took it to my local golf cart service center for a spring service this year. When they gave my back the cart it now smokes. The muffler had a dent in the top when previous before and now they say the reason it smokes is because of the dent in my muffler and I need to replace. It did not smoke before so I am now really confused. Would that be a accurate statement.

V/r,
Carla

I've never heard of a muffler causing smoke, excepting if it were plugged which is very unlikely on that cart. Old 2 strokes fill the muffler with oil and can burn inside making lots of smoke, but newer 4 stroke carts don't do that. You need to check the airbox make sure it is not full of oil and getting sucked into the engine. If the oil is overfilled that is what happens and usually trashes the filter. A cart can have a worn out engine and some people will let it get low on oil when they sell it, then it stops smoking. You change or fill the oil and it then smokes again, but often older carts with lot of miles on them. They will burn oil all the time but usually run ok. Unless this muffler dent is a special case I would take the cart elsewhere, though there still could be something wrong with it.
