Default '75 Gran Cushman 400 - Batteries

I bought a Chushman 898110 7510 last night that runs and appears to be in decent shape overall. I drove it around the block, it was very slow and barely made it up the driveway. The six 6v batteries are all Trojan, 5 are 105 Mileage Masters, one is a T-105 Plus. All six appear to have swelling around the terminals and on the sides. I assume all six should be replaced. If I make the investment in new batteries, what kind of performance should I expect?
Anything else I should check before getting in too deep?

Batteries don't do much for speed, but distance. Its a 12-14 MPH cart.

You can convert to 48 volts though for more performance

What all is involved in the conversion to 48 volts. Are there obvious benefits?
