Default High compression or bad testing?

Hello Group. I just found a decent little 1999 G16A and brought it home yesterday. Its running a little rough, so Carb adjustments, Sooty plug, Stuck breaks Etc. Part of my troubleshooting was compression. I removed the Plug, Put my tester in and then held the pedal down for 6-10 revolutions. It tests 185Lbs? That sounds high to me, but part of me wants to think healthy. Could this be Tight valves, or does my process sound incorrect? I will check the valves when im able to get to it. I just didn't want to blow it up in the meantime. Thank you~
