Do I need to unhook the cables to check the voltage on each battery?

Re: 05 club car 48 volt will not run please help
No need to disconnect cables. Just positve from the meter to positive on the battery. Then negative on meter to negative on the battery. Then you can get a full pack reading by finding your combined pack + and -. It may take 30 seconds when you switch it back to "run" before fully initializing the controller.

Re: 05 club car 48 volt will not run please help
20 will get you a meltdown on 48v. NO? I always put mine above whatever I suspect I am going to be hooking it up to. So i would put it on 200 dcv. ( dcv = direct current voltage).

20 is fine if your testing individual 12 volt batts but not for the whole pack
