Default Blue sea fuse box

I was thinking of getting a blue sea fuse box, I sort of like having the grounds and fuses all in one box...

On the blue sea fuse box documents, it shows inserting a fuse from battery positive going to the fuse box.

Does this sound correct? Did not think you needed to fuse the fuse box?

Any thoughts?

Thx

Fuses are safety links --- is it needed? Maybe not. Are they covering their arse by suggesting one? You bet Anyway - your choice.

I prefer to keep and positive and negative terminals in separate locations so the chance of any accidental interaction is reduced.

Yes, you do need to fuse the fuse box.

Example- Look at your house circuit box. Add all the values of the branch circuits. I bet they total more than the rating of the main breaker. That is based on the assumption that you won't be using all branches at the same time, therefore the circuit box doesn't need to be built to 500amp or 600amp design specs ( with a resulting cost savings clear back to the power companies sub-station). BUT with the remote possibility of an overload, a main breaker is protecting the circuit box from damage. Without the main breaker we would be limited to a dryer, stove, dish washer, A/C and a couple of light bulbs.

The same thinking applies to Blue Sea box. One can have a total of branch circuits greater than the box rating if all circuits are not drawing at the same time. A fuse in the supply side protects the WHOLE system from an overload.

Fuses exist protect wiring in a circuit....generally. The battery positive should be fused at the source (or within 7" in the marine world ) to protect the wiring going to the fuse panel. Then, the fuses (or breakers) in the panel protect the wiring of the individual branch circuits.

I have the Blue Sea fuse boxes in both the drag cart and pit cart. Nice product. I have the pit cart 12v system fused at the battery. I don't fuse the 12v system on the drag cart but I disconnect it after every pass. Would definitely recommend fusing the battery on a regular cart's 12v system.

So what size fuse would you put ahead of the fuse box?

What size wire is feeding the fuse box? You want one that will blow before the wire melts down or catches fire.

It's actually simple look up based on the ampacity of the wire. Blue Sea Systems even has an app called 'circuit wizard' to help with the look up.
