"Rectangle peg in a round hole"
I am wanting to replace my round analog battery meter with a rectangular digital meter. Any ideas on how to neatly fill a "round hole with a rectangular peg?"

Scottyb has a nice aluminum plate that should work nicely!

Re: "Rectangle peg in a round hole"
On my precedent, I went to an office store and bought a small black trash can. Then I cut out a section to cover the dash and put my rectangle meters in. Screwed it all in.
I did wrap mine in carbon fiber though. |

I did replace the silver bolts with black allen head bolts, looks much nicer.

Re: "Rectangle peg in a round hole"
I don't mean to teach you how to suck eggs (do you use that expression in the States?) but I don't know what your level of expertise with DIY is, so please bear with me.
The only way to really make it "disappear" without having a plate or circle showing is to patch the hole perfectly, then cut a new rectangle for the meter. One way is to cut a circle of plastic or metal which is the same thickness as the dash and the same diameter as the hole. Clean the area around the hole on the back of the dash because this is where adhesive will go. Cut another circle which is about 1/4"-3/16" larger in diameter than the first. Using a strong plastic adhesive or a two pack epoxy adhesive (for strength) put adhesive all over one surface of the bigger circle and position the smaller circle on it concentrically and put them into the hole from the back so that the hole is plugged. Make sure that the patch fits perfectly flush with the front of the dash and clamp them as the epoxy dries. After the adhesive is fully dry, cut the new hole for the rectangular meter then use a plastic filler around the edges at the front of the patch and sand it smooth. Once the patch is in position and the dash is smooth you can completely mask it in one of two ways:
Install the new meter. If you don't want to do all that, the easiest way is to get one of scottyb's aluminium plates (which you can paint black if it isn't already). |

Re: "Rectangle peg in a round hole"
SOmeone on here had taken their round gauge and took the guts out of it and replaced with a panel that they put their digital gauge in....
looked sweet, but I can't find the post. |
