So do I hold off on the batteries and buy the 48v supporting components (what ever those may be) then buy (6) 8v batteries?!

I think the package 474 will cover my needs. Aside from batteries is that all I need? At least until I do my lift kit and larger tires?
What are the ideal batteries for this application?

Pkg 474 will allow maximum amperage flow to the motor when called for. This increased amperage will allow the motor to produce more torque if it is delivered without great loss. Loss comes from resistance. Resistance causes heat. Heat causes failure.
This is a series drive cart. In a series drive system the battery amperage flows through all the hi-amp components on the way to the motor. These components need to be of proper size to avoid resisting the flow. These components include...
The speed control
The main solenoid
The F&R switch (rotary or contactor type)
Every large cable in the cart should be 2g for controls 500a and up
The controller should be 500a or better and matched with a 400a Solenoid.

For peak performance use 48v. 6/8v batteries drop right into the orig trays.
Optimum size battery would be 190 amp hours, any make.
We sell DPI charger with a plug to fit this cart. 48v will produce more speed and torque

I hope this helps
