Rear identification help needed

Hi everyone, brand new to this as I finally broke something. I have an old EZGO modified from electric to gas with an 8hp Kohler. Not sure if the rear is original but I believe the clutch is fried. I’m hoping someone can look at the picture and identify the parts so I can go shopping...

Basically it was revving up fairly high and would jump hard into gear but then ran great this year, but after a long weekend of abuse it let go while my kids were driving. Both the front and rear clutch assemblies spin, as the belt gets tight and you can feel a slight surge like its trying to move. When I put the cart on jack stands the drive wheel will spin but under load it won’t move me. Now I’ll try to figure out how to post the picture.

Need a little better pic of the rear axle. But the secondary clutch looks like an ezgo model. Are you sure that you did not strip out a axle hub?

I’m open to any troubleshooting suggestions. I restore old boats and mostly Camaros so golf carts are new to me. There isn’t any grinding noise, everything sounds smooth. I just assumed the clutch burned out since the drive wheel will spin up pretty fast in the air.

Cant see much in the pic, but that looks like it could be a gas rear end? not a converted electric.

To check clutches just put on jack stands, run thru the rpm's, as rpm's come up front clutch should compress and rear clutch should compress.
If the clutch's are week under a load the belt will slip, squeal .


I 2nd the motion to check the end of the axles and hubs 1st!

All you have to do is pull the brake drums off and look at the splines.

Ok I follow you now. I’m old and slow but eventually catch on.

Both clutches compress immediately as it spins up and there hasn’t been any squealing leading up to the failure. Note: I use this all the time and it always ran great (carb rebuild was required) but on a long weekend for a wedding reception we had my adult boys using it constantly. At one point my son came up and said it “just stopped running” and they were pushing it back to my shop so I didn’t get to experience the breakage. Even grown up nobody knows what happened...ugh.

I’ll pull the hub when I get back from fishing Tuesday or Wednesday and check that out next.

You guys are awesome, it’s the left hub as suggested. Maybe it’s by design, but the axle doesn’t actually have signs of damage but the hub is stripped clean. Soft metal hard metal, cheapest part gets the “soft” steel.

I learned a lot today, didn’t realize these rear differentials are so similar to a car. That’s a good thing, I know cars lol.

Thank you for all the help, I’ll try to pick up a new hub tomorrow. Next project is fixing the wife’s EZGO with the backfire issue. Another day..

Glad everything worked out.

by the way, that's a gas rear end, and it has reverse built in it.
The stud looking thing out of the top of the center of the rear end is the shifter!!
You could have reverse with just a little fab work

Sorry gearhead, but I think that is the governer shaft. But I think the axle is a me29 axle. The forward and reverse shaft should be behind the engine halfway down the front of the rearend.
