Problem with 87 EZGO (no power)
I am working on an 87 fleet cart for a neighbor. Here is the problem. When you are on flat ground it will move but soon as you hit a slight incline it stops.I dont know much about these older carts but I have checked and cleaned all the connections and I am still getting 36 volts from the battery pack when this thing comes to a stop. There is metal box thing down there around the batteries that gets real hot.I dont know what it is but it has battery cables going to it.It has two big coiled up wires inside of it.One of them gets real hot.Don't know if that has something to do with it. Please help.
Thanks,Kevin |

R&K do you know how old the batteries are? From what you said if its reading 36v the pack is empty and the pack may be getting tired. Also someone with better knowledge should reply soon.

Re: Problem with 87 EZGO (no power)
OK let's go over a few things first.
You have a resistor coil speed control system. The resistor coils "bleed off" excess voltage to control the speed. These coils are out of the circuit at STOP and wide open throttle. The accelerator linkage activates an arm with a contact that slides over contacts in a board. All of these contacts need to be in good, flat, clean condition as well as the cable connections to them. Yes, the resistor coils will glow red hot when running prolonged times at less than WOT. There should be three coils of three different gauges and 4 connections on top of the resistor coil box. If not, get a diagram and go over every connection for accuracy. Make sure movable arm contact makes full, free, and complete travel from top to bottom contact. Inspect and make sure FNR connections are clean/tight and look for any signs of excess heat. Charge your batteries. 36v = dead. Check and make sure you haven't spun a hub on either side of rear. |

Re: Problem with 87 EZGO (no power)
I have a spare board. Needs the micro switch and the movable arm but has new contacts and a 36v stock solenoid. PM for details if interested.
Glad you found the problem. |
