Default Whining and delay before cranking and starting

I just bought a 2006 club car ds. It ran good when I test drove it but once I got home it was acting up. When I hit the gas it just sits there and whines for a few seconds then it will slowly start turning over and then it runs. Once it starts it runs great. That initial foot on the pedal takes 4 to 8 seconds before it turns over and runs. Needless to say I am furious since I have owned it for a total of 2 hours. Hopefully it’s an easy fix. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

First, make sure the battery is fully charged, and clean the battery terminals and connections with a wire brush. Corrosion can build up in between the battery terminals, so when you step on the gas the voltage drop is enough the starter/generator has a hard time turning.

If that doesn't work, then have the battery tested at any parts store. Weak/bad battery can cause the same thing. (Still want to make sure the terminals you are connecting to the battery are clean).

The other possibility would be that the brushes are worn in the starter/generator. Typically when the brushes are worn, it won't turn over at all instead of turning slowly, but still a possibility.

Any way you look at it, should be a cheap and easy fix. Just one of those things that you sometimes run across when buying a used car, golf cart, or anything for that matter. Nothing worth getting too upset about, we'll help you get everything up and going like it should!

It sounds like a loose starter/generator belt to me!

Starter/gen belt is loose. The whine is the belt slipping.
Check the belt for wear and glazing. If it's glazed, replace it.
If it looks OK, tighten it up a little and it should be good.

I appreciate your help. I cleaned the battery contacts and that didn’t help so I have the battery charging now. Hopefully it’s something simple.

I will check the belt as well. It seems like there is not enough power to crank it over and that built up compression is holding it up because there are times it works but only maybe 1 out of 20 times.

Prinkdog, as others have suggested check the BELT. Those of us who own and work on these know they are notorious for this problem. Do as fairtax suggested and I'm 99% sure you will correct the problem. Easy fix.

And to BGW!

It does seem to be the belt like everyone is saying. It is pretty tight and it doesn’t seem glazed but it is definitely slipping. I will replace it and hopefully that solves it.

Make sure you get the correct one. It sounds as though you may have the wrong belt on it now.
