06 G22 carb adjust
Hi all, I recently acquired a 2006 Yamaha G22 and have been going through it methodically. I took the carb off tonight and cleaned it up, all jets and orifices etc. I noticed that there’s an adjustment screw on it with one of those black plastic movement limiters like you see on weed eaters and leaf blowers now. I set it in the middle, but I’m wondering if there’s a way to “tune” it for optimal performance?

Re: 06 G22 carb adjust
It's set within the range of optimal performance, for stock engines. That screw cant "get you any extra horsepower" if that cap were gone. The problem is this, without taking it out when fully cleaning the carb, you didnt fully clean the carb. Btw, 90% of the people who "cleaned the carb" didnt do a real job anyway, and in some ways that's good, they would have just 'effed up the harder to remove parts anyway. So the guy who does a real job has to deal with less "stripped out" parts. Seen too many carbs ruined by bad "I cleaned out the carb" jobs....
If that cap were gone (can be pretty easily removed, but technically illegal for a shop to do), It would allow a little more flexibility for tune in low to mid range operation. Not really any performance boost to be had there worth worrying about. I really think the worst part of that cap relates to cleaning a gunked-up carb. (Since you cant take it out & clean). At least you know some screwdriver jockey didnt over tighten it and ruin the whole carb by cranking it down too hard. That's far worse risk than any power gains you might get by adjusting it. |

Re: 06 G22 carb adjust
Thanks CG, I wasn’t really looking for any performance gains, just maintenance stuff so that I know what’s been done and when. I figured the adjustment would have some small effect on how it runs in the same way the high and low rpm screws on a chain saw or a weed eater do. Subtle improvements. I’m sure I might’ve missed something despite watching umpteen carb cleaning videos on YouTube, but its probably better than it was, which is something. Thanks for taking the time.

Re: 06 G22 carb adjust
EPA mandated for emissions compliance.
And I never said "increasing HP is impossible", but turning the adjustment screws on a yamaha carb wont do anything to make more power than a properly tuned example from the factory. |
