Default Cart made a loud noise and stopped working?

I have a Yamaha G14 with a Predator 670cc motor installed by previous owner. I was driving it the other day and heard something loud and metal-sounding and it pretty much stopped driving and lost power to the wheels.

I don't know if it lost all power to the wheels or not, but I just coasted to the side of the road and got a tow truck.

The engine runs perfectly, so it's something with the transmission/clutch/dif?

I can see the belt has a bunch of frays in it now, but that happened during the "break event", whatever it was.

Can somebody help me understand what these things I'm looking at are and how they work?

Is there a belt tensioner somewhere that could have broken?

In this below picture:
  • What is #1? Is it the clutch?
  • How do #2 and #3 work? It's a spring between two interlocking pieces that are connected to the rear...is it a differential or transmission?
  • It doesn't seem like #2 & #3 lock up very well...what is this assembly?
  • The belt doesn't look as aligned anymore and you can see the new frays near #4

This below assembly feels like where the problem is, but what is it?

For good measure

Sounds like you need a crash course in CVT systems. Here's a good video that explains what things are and how they work. Golf carts, UTV's, and ATV's all use the same basic system. CVT = Continuously Variable Transmission.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCEvBGT8twM

With that said, the components on your cart don't appear to be broken or damaged. So if there isn't any visible damage, you might want to post a video to youtube and post the link here. Try and run the engine with the trans in neutral, and rev it up several times. That'll let us know if things are operating normally and smooth.

If the CVT system is ok, it's possible that the damage could be internal in the transmission. Hopefully not.

One thing I do notice in your pics....there is a white spring in the secondary clutch. That is most likely an "Ebay" or "Amazon" heavy duty spring. I would replace that with a "stock Yamaha spring" that fits your cart. That spring is way too heavy for what you are using it for. The Vtwin engine has a ton of torque, so the heavy spring is not needed. A stock Yamaha spring will make the CVT system operate much better performance wise and will do so without nearly as much tension.

I'm thinking the heavy white spring caused the c clip on the helix to snap off, and maybe even sheared the keyway on the movable sheave.

It also looks like the engine might not be perfectly aligned with the transmission. Basically the primary clutch is not lined up with the secondary clutch. The belt in the primary looks like it's sitting crooked.

Also, you might want to load your photos with a different software without porn

Moderators, can we fix this?

I reposted the pics here

Your 780 primary is not fully closing. Either a broken spring or broken pin bushing.

What's a "780 primary"? Is that the primary clutch and what does the 780 signify?

Where can I look for the pin bushing?

I made a video of it running. The belt is frayed, but I believe that happened during the "break event".

At 0:25 you can hear a "click" when I start pressing the accelerator and the brake releases. I'm sort of lightly revving it, then the second click is when I lock the brake back. I barely let it engage because I was worried the fraying belt might snag something.

Heavy Spring - I didn't put that spring, but was seeing that it increases torque and is good if it has a lift kit + large tires per this video @ 0:41. However, his "power spring" still looks smaller than mine.

When I accelerate, it takes higher-RPM's to spin up before the wheels engage, causing the front two tires to jump off the ground at times. Is this because of the oversized spring?

Engine/Transmission alignment - I noticed this too, and it was not previously like that. I think anyway. It almost looks like the primary clutch is in a different position?

I took the belt off and took another video without the engine running.

In the video I:
  • With the brakes locked, I spin the secondary clutch and spring by hand.
  • Then I move the camera around randomly at things in case you guys see something I don't.
  • then I unlock the brakes and spin the rear wheels by hand

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBNHnxoBP3M

Should I be able to move the spring like I do in the beginning of the video? I thought the end of the spring went into the helix like this picture?

But then I found this spring that does not have a little piece that goes into the helix.

Your #1 is the comet 780 primary clutch. You would have to remove it from the engine and disasemble it to check for broken parts
