Best way to wire a winch??
I done a search before i started a new thread, but still did not find anything on wiring my new winch (viper 3000 lb). To start I have a 2007 TXT PDS cart with 8-6 volt batteries (48 volts) and i know that i can wire straight up to two of them to get 12 volts. I had also heard about a voltage reducer from a 48volt to 12 volt, but they seem pretty high when I find the larger amp models. What is the preferred way to go with this or is there a another way that is better????

Re: Best way to wire a winch??
An auxilliary 12v battery. If you actually use the winch regularly and are straining it to near it's limit, you may overdraw your expensive convertor. If you are like me, when the winch is being used, the stereo is also blaring away. If it's dark, the lights are on as well. I run all my toys off the 12v. My pack runs the cart and nothing else.

Re: Best way to wire a winch??
I just added two extra batteries to this cart and have no room for the extra battery!! I want use or don't intend to use this winch very much anyway just as a safety net for pulling me out!! So what can I do now???? Will hooking them up straight two of the two 6-volt batteries i have work?? Also I don't have radio and my lights are led's.

If it's only used occasionally, your best bet may be to run it off of two cart batteries. You can always rotate which two batteries you use, to keep them balanced.

Re: Best way to wire a winch??
Its easiest to just put a 12volt boat battery under the seat on the side and wire it up. Thats my set up and it works great

I assume when he said he had no more room because he has eight batteries, that he did what I did, and put them all under the seat.

It would be best to do this before the 36V charger was used on the pack. After the winch is used, check the individual battery voltages and bring those two up to about the same voltage as the other six. It is a little tricky because of the surface charge batteries acquire while charging, but a quick trip around the yard takes care of most of it. I use a 12VDC electric impact wrench occasionally and roughly calculate how many AH it pulls out of the two batteries I connected it to, than put about the same number of AHs back into them with a 6A 12V charger. I've missed on both high and low sides, but after a couple 36V recharge cycles, the pack's balance returns to normal. |

Re: Best way to wire a winch??
I agree with Johnnie. If this is for emergency use only, connect to any 2 batteries and if you use the winch go home and put a 12v charger on the 2 over taxed winch batteries until they are back up to the SOC of the rest of the pack BEFORE recharging the pack with the cart charger.

Re: Best way to wire a winch??
Ok, that sounds a little complicated, but I'm new to this golf cart thing and might not understand????? I have come up with a new way of maybe making this work!! It will take a little bite of wiring on my end, but if I wire all 8 batteries to make 12 volts then it would pull evenly. That would mean I would be connecting 4 pairs of batteries together for 12 volts on each pair and then connecting them together were it stays at 12 volts!! Would this work and pull from all batteries involved????
