do I have enough power?
I have a 1995 36v series medalist EZGO. It appears to have the original GE 2hp motor. Not sure about the controller, looks newer but probably just 250amps. And it's looking more and more like I'll have new batteries. I will be using it around the campground. I'd like speed to be around 12/15 mph and there are some slight hills to climb. Will I have enough power for a back seat and passengers?
Thanks in advance. Yeabuddy! |

Re: do I have enough power?
2005 Medalist??? Are you sure? Is the bodywork all metal? What makes you think it's a 2005?

To know if you have enough power there's only one way to find out. Go try it. It really depends on what you need and thenterrsin you drive.

Re: do I have enough power?
Sorry 1995. I'll have to go back and edit my other posts. Thanks gonorman but now that you mention it... the body is not metal. Were all medalists metal? I suppose a new body could have been installed. It looks practically new.

Re: do I have enough power?
Yes, all Medalists had a metal body and it was produced from 1993 to 1996 according to the EZGO website: http://www.shopezgo.com/www404.aspx?...ialNumber.html
Also according to the same website, the plastic body TXT was produced from 1996 to Present, so the was an over lap, but not in 1995. However, they both used the same chassis, so the original metal body could have easily been replaced with a TXT body. The published stock speed is 12 MPH and you want it to go about 15, which is a 25% increase. And you want to add a rear seat. It is doable, but we need to know some more things about the cart. Is it the cart pictured in your avatar? If so, it has aftermarket wheels and tire. so what is the tire height? (measured preferably) Are the high current cables 4Ga or thicker? What is the cart's current top speed? |

Re: do I have enough power?
Yep, it's the one in my avatar. I measured the wheels to be 18'' from floor to the top of the tire. They are MJFX Velocity Wheels with 215/40-12 tires
http://www.golfcartking.com/Madjax-1.../a19-041lp.htm The current speed in 12mph, not sure about the cables but will double check tonight. Here's a pic of the bank... and a full picture of the cart... |

Re: do I have enough power?
A picture is worth a thousand Q&A. I wish all members would do that when they ask about their cart.
Power is going to be relative & questionable. The OEM system is engineered for 18" tires, 2 passengers, and groomed fairway. Larger tires and rear seating all demand more power. Generally speaking the cart is going to be overloaded and the gearing has been raised. It's time to upgrade the amperage delivery system to allow the 2.5hp motor to produce all the torque that it can. |

Re: do I have enough power?
Nice looking cart.
The 18" tires look mighty new, so I suspect installing taller tires isn't an option. Anyway, you are looking for both more speed and more torque and as Scotty said, taller tire will increase speed, but at the expense of torque and torque is what is needed for acceleration, hill climbing and weight carrying abilities. Basically, there are only two ways of getting more speed and torque at the same time, higher battery pack voltage or different motor. You need new batteries, so now would be the time to up the pack voltage. Of course, that means upgrading the controller and solenoid to units that operate at the higher voltage, as well as getting a battery charger that matches the battery pack voltage. Or you could replace the motor with one that produces more speed and torque, but you'd still have to replace the controller and solenoid to get the full performance out of the motor. |

Re: do I have enough power?
Thanks guys. I anticipated a lot of your responses... I was afraid of that. Can you tell what gauge the cables are by the pictures?
Needing new batteries has put a big dent in my funds for improvement so I think I'll have to stick with the 36v configuration. Would a simple upgrade to a 400amp controller be sufficient for more torque? I don't mind 12mph, I can forgo the backseat if it's a must, I just don't want it to crawl up hills. |

Re: do I have enough power?
I can't read the printing on the cables, since the image loses definition when I enlarge it, however they appear to be stock type construction, so I'd guess they are 6Ga. They all (there are 13 of them) need to be at least 4Ga.
If any are getting very warm, you are losing energy that should be going to the motor. A 400A controller running on 36V with 18" tires will haul 4 passengers, but all electric carts slow down on hills, some more than others. Again, it depends on the energy losses in the amp delivery system. The motor will draw more amps going uphill, if there is excessive resistance in the cables and.or connections, it slow down more than it would otherwise. You will need to replace the solenoid also. The stock solenoid is only rated at 85A, which is barely marginal for a stock controller and totally inadequate for a 400A controller. Check out the Controller/Solenoid upgrade kits at Carts Unlimited: http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Custom_Options.html The text at the top of the page gives a pretty good overview of things to take into consideration when upgrading a cart. Also, since you are replacing batteries, read everything on the site with the word "Battery" in the title. |
