Default G16 TDC Question for Valve Adjust

I have been reading around on valve adjustments and have a question to make sure I am doing it right.
I have a 2000 Yamaha G16.
From what I have read my valve clearance is .004" at TDC.
I want to make sure I am at the correct TDC.
To determine this I am sticking a screw driver in the spark plug hole. But I have 2 TDC, correct?
How do I know which one is the correct TDC for valve adjust?

You want TDC on compression stroke when both valves are completely closed.

Just so I am clear, If I were to put my finger over the spark plug hole and rotate to compression stroke it would blow air out of the spark plug hole. Not suck in?

Made my valve adjust to .004"
The original clearance was .010" Is that enough to create a "valve rattle" when I go up a hill?
Or is that just the sound the cart makes when laboring up a hill?

Ok, I adjusted my valves to .004 and the engine runs rough going up a hill. When I turn around and go down that hill it runs better.
Any ideas on why it runs rough when in a strain?
