Buggies Unlimited CC DS steering column repair kit help needed
I've got a diagram/schematic on how the new parts go in. Plus it's basically reverse of how the old ones come out. But, I don't know where the plastic bushing with the cushion/styrofoam outer cover piece goes because my cart didn't have it and also I just want to understand what keeps pressure on all the bearings and washers, etc. one of the last pieces in the steering wheel side is the tooth washer but the diameter is too big to grip anything in order to help compress the upper and lower bearings. I assume there should be some measure of compression due to the spring on the steer box side of the steering column assembly. Can anybody help shed some light on this for me?

Here's a 95/96 Service manual... (not much different from your 99)
Section 8 should answer most of your questions! |

Re: Buggies Unlimited CC DS steering column repair kit help needed
Thanks lockman. That's very clear on order of installing pieces.
My only problem now is the tooth washer (manual calls it a retaining ring) just slides right over the entire steering shaft. It's too big to grip the shaft. I understand how these little convex shaped tooth washers slip over something in one direction but won't slide back because it grips the shaft. There's something I'm not getting but I don't know what it is. |

Figure 8-2 and 8-4 shows where retainer goes. It is #22.

Re: Buggies Unlimited CC DS steering column repair kit help needed
I got it figured out then I broke the black plastic sleeve flanges from applying too much tension to the bearings.
The tooth washer was coned to much and wouldn't grip the steering shaft. I flattened it out which bent the teeth inward more and it all worked great until I broke the lip out of the plastic bearing sieve pieces. Got a couple more on the way then it should all be good to go. Thanks to you all for input. |
