Re: No spark when plug is installed - Yamaha G1
Sounds like a bad coil or it is shorting out.

Re: No spark when plug is installed - Yamaha G1
Is there an easy way to check the coil?

Re: No spark when plug is installed - Yamaha G1
Does anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram for a 1982 G1A3?
Still trying to figure this out. |

Re: No spark when plug is installed - Yamaha G1
Update; I've repeated my test with the spark plug grounded differently. Same results, thumb over hole (with compression) no spark, thumb off hole (no compression) spark is present.
I'm thinking it has to be related to the compression causing the engine to slow down slightly, and at the slower speed (revolutions) it's not able to produce a spark. Does this make sense? If so, I'm wondering if it's a problem with the magneto assembly -- possibly a faulty pulser coil? Does anyone know how to test this? Is it difficult to remove the rotor? Thanks! |

Re: No spark when plug is installed - Yamaha G1
Ran into this problem with a lawn mower a long time ago.
Pulled the plug, had spark when grounded against the head. My best friend in 1974, my wife in 1997, suggested that maybe the spark plug was bad. With my background in mechanical engineering, and having spent my entire life working on engines, I said no way, based on the above. Put in a New spark plug and it ran..... I am not a fan of shot gun fixes, but eliminate the cheap and obvious. |

Re: No spark when plug is installed - Yamaha G1
ok...this is a strange one. Is it possible that a leak in the flywheel side seal is blowing (or sucking) air through the magneto causing a short or open only when the engine is under compression. Probably not, but if the symtoms are accurate, that's all I can come up with.
