Default G16 cam help

i have a 2001 g16 i was driving it last night all of a sudden i had some loud ticking for maybe 5 seconds i stopped to see if i could figure out where it was coming from and that was it dead
got towed home pulled the spark plug
the piston is moving up and down
the valves are not moving
the rocker arms and valves are free when i push the valve springs down
push rods are fine not bent
the rocker arms both look to be in the same position without measuring or putting a straight edge from one to the other
any ideas what happened
is the cam broke ?
any help would be greatly appreciated

Do the pushrods move at all when you turn the motor over?

No push rods do not move
I have been doing some research and I found someone that posted something similar
Said it was striped cam gears?
What do you think

If the rods aren't moving, the cam isn't turning. You'll need to pull the side cover to find out why.

i saw a place called J&m golf carts
550 for rebuilt engine
i see the crank and cam together close to 500
i don't know if this engine i have would be an acceptable core to exchange but if so that may be a better deal

One of the G16 guys here can give you all the specifics, but I'm sure the motor will need to come out.

It takes less than 1/2hr to remove the motor(providing its not a rusty mess),not worth the hassle of trying to do anything to it in the cart.Unhook the belts,wiring,fuel-lines,throttle-cable and unbolt the generator(leave it wired up,just move it away).Unbolt the 4 cradle-mounts from the frame and lift the whole thing out.If you go thru the hassle of a tear-down in the cart, and the block or crank is damaged, you will be removing it anyway.Either the cam-gear is damaged,or the camshaft snapped.Hope this helps.

Thank you for the response
If the cam gears are bad does that require me to replace the crank also or does the gear come off.
Also if it is the gears
What would cause this
I'm in flat florida
No high speed down hills here
Is it a hard job to replace them
Thanks again

I think once you open it up, you'll have more information.
