From other threads that I have read it doesn't seem like a practical thing to do because the the 2 cycle engine is designed to turn in both directions, which is how the cart goes forward and backward. (I also have a 2 cycle golf cart.)

If you were going to convert to a 4 cycle you would have to deal with finding a new differential/transmission. Also, the shaft on most 4 cycle engines are parallel with the rear axel where as the 2 cycles are perpendicular.

I hope I didn't just shoot down your project but at least you know what your getting into.

Might be cheaper and less headaches to sell it and buy a 4 cycle cart.

As stated the easiest way would be to get a newer cart.
Next would be a complete transaxle swap.
After that a comet trans.
It would take a lot of fabrication and a drive chain or belt between the current rear end and this box. Then mount the engine just like the original is .

Wrong set but could be used with chains. ultra cheap not a really good set. Designed for mini bikes.

Better clutch set 3/4 driven 1 in drive up to 16 hp but have seen them handle 25. Not very good on belts though.

Local guy modded his without reverse. Its in Craigslist.
Do not care for it but you get the idea.

Just use a go cart mount with the tranny listed above and mount it farther forward in the right place not like this one on top the axle.
Then a coupler to the existing axle from the back of the trans.
