G2 igniter unit bypass
Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a non running G2, I discovered the igniter unit has some broken terminals. So before I try to find one and spend a bunch on getting this engine running is there any option to bypass? If this engine doesn't pan out I'll do a BB conversion Thanks for help! |

I don't think so. Currently hooking up a DC gy6 box coil and plug might be the best option, search for it here

Re: G2 igniter unit bypass
I don't see how. Are the terminals broken on the igniter or the wire harness side?

Re: G2 igniter unit bypass
Did anyone ever find a way to bypass the ignitor? I have an 85 G2 that i didn't pay a lot of money for and the ignitors im finding are around $150? It also looks like my ignitor is from a G9.. longer black box, looks like a mitsubishi part..is that about right?
Thank you all! Last edited by matthew.glenn2; 11-26-2017 at 04:49 PM.. Reason: change |

Re: G2 igniter unit bypass
You can't just "bypass the ignitor", sorry, myth busted. Can't bypass the "distributor" on a old car. Can't bypass the whole "computer" on a new car either.

Re: G2 igniter unit bypass
Ignitor serves two vital functions that can't be bypassed. It checks timing in relation to crankshaft position, and it decides how long, and exactly when to energize the coil to make spark at the plug. Too much duties to just "bypass with a paperclip".

Re: G2 igniter unit bypass
I had a customer with a G8 who brought it in to diagnose a hard starting issue. Ran OK at speed but was very hard to start - occasionally backfiring to the point it would make the cart jump backwards. He said it had been doing that as long as he's owned it. Turns out a previous owner had done a GM HEI conversion. The problem with that on his Yamaha was that the static timing (based on the pick up's position relative to the flywheel rotation) is at about 30 degrees before top dead center. Great for power once running at speed, not so hot for starting. It seems the OE ignitor Module retards the spark till it exceeds a certain RPM's. Allows it to start closer to 10 degrees before top dead center, then advance to around 30 once it's up to speed. Cart ran great after it had been swapped back to the correct Ignitor.

Re: G2 igniter unit bypass
I currently have a hei unit on my g2, runs at static 2 degrees btdc, works for cheap but as you can guess, no power.
I have all the hardware and the pickup coil signal conditioner work done for a Arduino ignition, working on coding currently. |
