Default Yamaha G22A first cart! winter overhaul :)

So I bought this 2003 G22A from a local guy for $750. It's pretty clean and tight but blowing blueish smoke when it heats up. Gas odor in oil I just drained.
Replaced spark plug (nasty) and cleaned carb and air filter. Waiting for a new carb gasket and oil screw washer before I put it back together and run it.
Might pull the fuel pump apart and clean it too. Hoping the smoke is just some muffler residue that needs to be burned out as bad rings would smoke immediately. Anyway gonna start there before I go ripping the engine apart and replacing rings. No big question here just keeping track of my progress and welcome any advice or feedback as I go along. I'm learning not just about this cart but also everything about how it works.

Wish I could find that year Yamaha that cheap.
I did pay 1000 for my 08 G29 though, it needed new clutches. It was a rental cart used on the beach. Has a lift and 12” rims and 23” tires. Some rust but not bad or rotten.

I guess I’d check compression first, adjust valves, clean carb etc, clean tank and fuel pump plus lines... that’s all free or cheap stuff to do I’d say. I wonder if the Yamaha’s have an oil ring like my flub car does. It’s smokes but has great compression and power.

Do you have any oil in the air box? Oil in the gas is an indication of a bad needle/float valve in the carb. OEM carb parts are the best.

Thanks BD. Just ordered a compression tester so will try that for sure. What's good like 120?

What valves need to be adjusted?

Yeah some oil in the air box but isn't it supposed to splash up? The filter side is dry just a little dirty.

The carb was a bit dirty I just cleaned it today. How do I check the needle/float valve? I took off the float and the little thing that looks like a bullet attached to it...is that the needle? didn't want to mess with the inner workings too much. I took out the 3 jet screws though and cleaned in there.

thanks:)

I honestly don’t know what the compression is on a Yamaha.

All the 357cc engines (G22 & Drive YDRA) have a built-in compression release, so a normal number could be as low as high 90s.

I always wondered how do you test it then?

The yamaha books say test like normal, and expect these low numbers...
