Default Yahama 79 G1 Brake Adjustment...

Hey all, having some problems with adjusting the brakes on my G1 - this is the early 79 - 81 model without the "self-adjusting" brakes - hoping someone here can help! When I actuate the brake I can see the cable fully pull the lever mechanism (i.e. my brake cable is adjusted properly), however only one side of the shoe actually moves outwards. Furthermore, the pad is very far away from even making contact with the housing. Adjusting the rod on the top ever so slightly expands the original position of the shoes+pads, but even at the max distance it's not even close to making contact. All of the issues above are the same for both the left and right brake. No idea if the brakes are stock, but everything else on the cart has been.

I'm assuming you are installing new brake shoes? Because the "Made in Korea" shoes are not original.

seems to be a lot of issues with the aftermarket brake shoes. I am unsure on the aftermarket drums.

heres a link with OE brake downs. may want to call as there was some changes through the years.

I love that they have/had whole backing plate assemblies. for the price totally worth it IMO

As I was investigating the proper brake pads to order I found the serial number.
It's pretty low.

This is the same 79 Yamaha G1 in the “Reverse” Thread and "Runs Rough" thread. Please pardon my spewing threads.... This project, with a bit of help, is just about finished.... Then I look for nice rock and I be gone.

The last major task from the refurb project was the brake pads. Yesterday I tossed the Korean pads out and put some official Yamaha pads in. They can actually stop the cart....eventually. One pad on the left side won’t move. I’m thinking a cable adjustment.

Then there are the adjusters on the top and bottom of the pads. These are not the self adjusting brake pads. I only have documentation for The self adjusting kind. The top adjustment is a square bolt that spreads a cylinder on the top front of the plate. Between the top tips of the shoes.
I would describe the bottom adjuster as a kind of cage nut. (See Photo) No clue. However I have not done an extensive search on either adjuster yet. I have the manuals but I didn’t find them helpful. If you have some experience with these adjustments G & I would appreciate hearing about it. I think it’s simple……

EDIT:

I just looked at one of the diagrams in the manual. In it One shoe was labeled "DRIVE" the other "DRIVEN". Does this mean anything? Is there a physical difference in the pads? Thanks Luke

Just looked at the diag. Both shoes have the same part number. That was a fright
However the diagram indicates that my assembly is upside down. Yikes.
