4 cycle ignition problem
92 4 cycle quit running suddenly. Would crank over fine but not start and would continue cranking after dropping pedal. No spark at plug during this. Assumed stuck solenoid and replaced but still have the same problem with new solenoid. Key switch and pedal switch operating correctly. The only way to get it to stop cranking is to disconnect the wire leading from the side of the solenoid to the coil, this drops the solenoid and it stays dropped. Almost as if the solenoid is being held closed by feedback from the coil. Any way to test coil for correct resistance? Any other ideas?

Re: 4 cycle ignition problem
Welcome to BGW
Testing an ezgo 4 cycle ignition coilWith your meter set on ohms, measure the resistance between both primary wire terminals and between the secondary wires. Normal reading would be: Primary (+ and -): 1.87 - 2.53 and Secondary: 10.8 - 14.6K ohms. |

Re: 4 cycle ignition problem
Check for a broken ground UNDER the starter solenoid area below the frame. Also if the grounds are still hooked up on the solenoid - there are a few. The solenoid has nothng to do with the spark. If not a ground, then look at the wire connector just short of the coil, make sure that theconnection is still good, it will be a white square shaped connector - these go bad from time to time...
crank the engine and push / pull / squeeze this connector to see if you get a spark. There's more to see, but try these first |

Re: 4 cycle ignition problem
I am getting 5 ohms on the primary side of the coil and nothing (Open Line) on the secondary side (plug wires). Checked grounds at solenoid, only see one and it grounds to the frame. I realize that normally solenoid has nothing to do with spark but seems as if these two faults are related since they happened at the same time and the run on condition began with the loss of spark. Weird unrelated stuff happening all at once usually leads to ground trouble but they all seem fine.

Re: 4 cycle ignition problem
As a matter of fact, it was going through a small puddle when it quit. I'll check it out. Thanks.

Re: 4 cycle ignition problem
Not the pedal switch, bypassed it completely with same result. Coil resistance is still about 5-8 ohms with no spark. Can't imagine why solenoid is staying closed. Bad coil or ignitor shouldn't affect the operation of the solenoid I would think. Both problems must be related.

Re: 4 cycle ignition problem
Fixed. Bad ground from ignitor, broken inside the insulation. Thanks for the help.
