Would there be any advantage price wise to switch to a 6, 8 volt set up?

i've said it before and i will say it again
do not scrimp on batteries ... the best you can afford
trust me on this
price is not the thing you should look at .. on the 8v vs 12v battery packs ... it's run time
trojan batteries
12v .. 100-Hr Rate 166 ... 320lbs per pack ... $670 (my area)
8v .. 100-Hr Rate 225 ... 456lbs per pack ... $770 (my area)
go with 4 g cables

Ok, I'm not too concerned with run time so I will stick with 12v. I'll do some researche on Trojans, thanks!

Scottyb from cartsunlimited.net has been a site sponsor for a while and sells cable kits with the correct lugs for golf cart batteries and includes the "OBC stud" adapter that You will need to route the thicker cable thru the OBC.

I am pretty darn sure that battery box is for 6 of the 8 volt golf cart batteries.
If I were you I would have a friend or someone near you with a golf cart take a look at it with you. They may see something we cannot see from here.

On edit I can see the center mounts and the type of hold downs.

First, I agree that for FLA batteries, the 6x8v setup offers the best performance/weight ratio.

Precedents did not have a battery bucket compatible with the 6x8v setup until the 2008.5 model, and only OBCs manufactured after January 2008 had the proper algorithm to charge 8v batteries.

Since he said that run time was not a concern, in this particular case I don't think the cost (new OBC or smart charger) and effort (DIY conversion) will return any appreciable benefits.

Edit: Oops, forgot this is a DS cart so I don't know if my comments about the battery bucket or OBC compatibility apply.
