Default How hot should a motor get?

Ran my cart for the first time with a load on it with the new 500A controller, hilly terrain for a small portion, wide open for about 30-45 min and motor was just barely too hot too keep my hand on it longer than maybe 10-20 seconds. controller never felt warm but the motor did so was curious how hot average operating external temp was. thanks

By your description I'm gonna say it was about 120 degrees which is fine.

I will respectively disagree. 120º feels warm . You describe 220º which is borderline too hot. Turn that controller down!

You analogy holds no water. Hold your hand on the hot hood of a car for a count of 5 then hit it with the infrared temp gun, you will be surprised.

Technically an outer case temp of 230º is acceptable and you should be able to hold your working hand on that for the count of 4 or 5

HF sells an inexpensive infrared heat gun.

If you can hold your hand on it for even 5 seconds it's not too hot. I have an IR thermometer that I use. These motors do get hot and you have to be careful when you upgrade to a higher current controller. I cooked my stock motor with mine and I had it dialed to 400A max. I now have a D&D motor and I am being more careful with it. The place to check the temp is near where the armature wires connect. That is the end where the heat is generated the most. Some stock motors have fairly small brushes and are not intended to run at more than 300A.

Amp draw varies so much with motor and tire, terrain, load. Some motor designs are better suited to certain applications and some are just designed to run more efficiently, drawing less amperage, creating less heat.
The infrared HF gun is a great tool for determining if your set up is running okay or on the brink of disaster
